Most people spend two years saving for a deposit. Darren Dowling spent two years wearing down his wife.
The Glasgow social media star — better known as Dazza, creator of the hit online series Does It Fry? — is raffling off his family home, a three-bedroom semi-detached house worth £250,000, for just £1 a ticket. The winner gets the house mortgage-free, with all legal fees covered, or can opt for £100,000 in cash instead.
And 10 per cent of the proceeds will go to When You Wish Upon a Star, the children's charity that grants wishes to seriously ill youngsters.
"I had the idea two years ago," Dazza told Glasgow Live. "I floated the idea to Emma, my wife. She said 'no chance', then I ground her down for two years until she finally said yes. I think she just got bored of saying no."
He added, with typical Dazza understatement: "I had done a few cash raffles in the meantime, but thankfully, Emma finally let me put pictures of the toilet on the internet."
From deep-fried Mars Bars to dream homes
If you've somehow missed him, Dazza has built a massive online following by deep-frying anything and everything — from Pot Noodles to cat food — on his wildly popular Does It Fry? series. He's racked up millions of views and become a household name beyond Glasgow after appearing on Channel 4's Come Dine With Me, where he served the show's first-ever fully deep-fried menu. His guests were... mixed. He scored 14 out of 40.
But while his online persona is all battered Mars Bars and belly laughs, the house raffle shows a different side.
"It's a great way to get someone onto the property ladder," Dazza said. "If we can make someone mortgage-free, then what a result that'll be. I'll be donating 10 per cent to charity as well, so the children's charity When You Wish Upon A Star is gonna be able to grant so many wishes from it."
A foot on the Glasgow ladder
The timing couldn't be better. Glasgow has been named the UK's top city for first-time buyers for four consecutive years, according to Aldermore via Mortgage Solutions, but that doesn't mean getting on the ladder is easy. Average house prices in the city have continued to climb, and for many young Glaswegians, the dream of owning a three-bed with a garden and a parking space feels a long way off.
Dazza's house — three bathrooms including an en-suite, front and back gardens, private parking — would be a life-changing prize for anyone struggling to take that first step.
The raffle is live now on Raffall.
So where will Dazza live?
That's the question everyone's asking. And, in classic Dazza fashion, there's no plan.
"We have absolutely no idea where we're going yet!" he laughed. "It's tricky cause we don't know if it's gonna do well yet. Think we're gonna look at it six months out to see how well it's doing. Either that or we just move into the loft and the winner becomes my landlord!"
When You Wish Upon a Star, the charity set to benefit, grants wishes to children living with life-threatening illnesses across the UK. The 10 per cent donation from the raffle could fund multiple wishes — from trips to Disneyland to meeting a favourite celebrity.
It's a story that could only come from Glasgow: a man who got famous deep-frying cat food is now trying to give away his house, for a quid a ticket, to make somebody's life. And he had to beg his wife for two years to let him do it.
Only in Glasgow.
