When Claire, the owner of Happy Acres Animal Sanctuary, set out on Wednesday morning to round up three escaped piglets, a fairy-tale rescue was the last thing on her mind. But that's exactly what she got.

Little Paddy, a dachshund, had been missing since Saturday 7th March. His owners had spent days putting up posters and sharing desperate appeals across social media, but no one had reported a sighting. As each day passed without news, hope was fading.

Then the pigs made a break for it.

Three piglets at Happy Acres managed to escape their enclosure, sending Claire and her daughter out to search the grounds. During that search, Claire noticed something unexpected — a small, furry figure drinking water in the horses' stables.

She went to investigate and found not a stray cat or a fox, but Paddy — skinny, thirsty, and very much alive. The little dachshund had apparently found his way to the sanctuary on his own, likely drawn by the promise of food, water and shelter.

"It seems the clever little dachshund had somehow managed to make his way to the aptly named Happy Acres," reported The Havering Daily, which first broke the story.

Claire quickly contacted Shantel from Harold Hill Deer Aid, a local animal rescue organisation well known in the Havering area for reuniting lost and injured animals with their families. Shantel traced Paddy's owners and arranged a joyful reunion the same day.

Apart from losing a little weight during his week-long adventure, Paddy was in good health — and clearly delighted to be home.

A storybook ending

It's hard to miss the fairy-tale quality of the whole episode. Three little pigs escape. Their owner goes searching. And instead of a big bad wolf, she finds a lost dachshund — which, if you squint at those long noses and short legs, is about as close to a wolf costume as any dog gets.

The Havering Daily noted the storybook parallels too, describing a "Red Riding Hood moment" as Claire ventured out on her search, only for the supposed danger to turn out to be a gentle sausage dog in need of a drink and a cuddle.

Credit where it's due

The happy ending owes everything to two people who acted quickly and with real kindness. Claire and her daughter at Happy Acres took the time to investigate when they could have walked past. And Shantel at Harold Hill Deer Aid used her network to get Paddy back to his family the same day.

Harold Hill Deer Aid, despite its name, handles rescues involving all kinds of animals across Havering and east London. The organisation relies on volunteers and community support — and stories like Paddy's are a reminder of the difference local rescue networks make.

As for the three little pigs? They were safely rounded up too. No wolves were involved.
