A rescue dog named Wiley is being credited with saving the lives of his Florida family, after his frantic barking woke a sleeping mother and daughter just half a minute before their motorhome was swallowed by flames.
Joi Roberts and her daughter Heather Belliveau were asleep inside their RV when it caught fire in the early hours of 23 December, local broadcaster WPTV News reported. As toxic smoke filled the cabin, Wiley refused to settle — barking until the pair stirred and stumbled to safety.
"If it would have been 30 seconds later, I don't know that we would have been able to get my mom out," Belliveau told WPTV, in comments republished by People magazine. "The place was engulfed with smoke at that point."
A 30-second margin
Photographs taken in the aftermath show the scale of what Wiley spared them: the interior of the motorhome scorched black, wiring melted into useless ribbons, ash settled over everything that was once a home.
Roberts, who also ran a resale business out of the RV, lost her livelihood in the same blaze. But in a small piece of grace amid the wreckage, the Christmas presents she had bought for her grandchildren survived intact.
"I can't explain it," she told WPTV. "Other than it's just another miracle. I think we had an evening of miracles, a night of miracles."
Community steps in
Word travelled quickly. Ginger's Pet Food Pantry, a local nonprofit, arrived at the scene to make sure Wiley and the family's other small dog were looked after.
"In the midst of all this loss, they have two little dogs, and we will be making sure those pups have everything they need — food, supplies and care — so they can stay safe and together during this incredibly difficult time," the organisation wrote in a Facebook post.
A relative, Danielle Roberts, has since launched a GoFundMe appeal to help the family rebuild, singling out Wiley's "quick instincts" for getting both women out alive.
"My elderly mother-in-law lost her home in a sudden and devastating fire," Danielle wrote on the fundraising page. "Everything she owned — memories, belongings, and the place she felt safest — was gone in a matter of minutes."
"This loss is not just material — it's emotional," she added. "After a lifetime of hard work, she is now left trying to piece together what comes next at a time in life when stability matters most."
A hotel, a hero, and what comes next
Roberts and Belliveau are staying in a hotel for now while they look for somewhere permanent to live. Wiley, by all accounts, is staying close.
The St Lucie County Fire District did not respond to People's requests for further information about the cause of the fire. But the cause, in the end, is not really the story here. The story is a rescue dog who returned the favour.
Adopted into a family who chose him, Wiley spent one cold December night choosing them right back — and giving them, by the slimmest margin imaginable, the rest of their lives to thank him.
