If you've got a ticket for Gorillaz at the OVO Hydro next Tuesday, congratulations — you're in for something special. If you haven't, you might want to start refreshing the resale pages, because this one's a complete sell-out.
The animated supergroup bring their Mountain Tour to Glasgow on March 24, marking their first Scottish gig since 2017. It's the latest stop on a mammoth world tour that kicked off in Bradford on March 13 and will wind its way through Europe, North America and South America before finishing in Santiago, Chile in December.
The New Album
The tour supports The Mountain, Gorillaz' ninth studio album, released on February 27 on the band's own label KONG. The 15-track record has been described as "an expansive sonic landscape of instruments and sounds, richly layered with voices, melodies and addictive beats." In other words, classic Gorillaz.
Early dates on the tour have given us a good idea of what to expect. The setlist blends new material from The Mountain — including opener "The Mountain" and lead single "The Happy Dictator" — with fan favourites spanning their 25-year career. Think "Feel Good Inc.", "Clint Eastwood", "Dirty Harry", "On Melancholy Hill" and "Stylo", alongside deeper cuts like "Rhinestone Eyes" and "El Mañana". Expect around 20 songs across the evening.
The Spectacle
Gorillaz have always been more than just a band. Created in 1998 by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and comic artist Jamie Hewlett, the project revolves around four animated characters — 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. Live shows blend Albarn's formidable live band with the kind of multimedia visuals you'd expect from a project born at the intersection of music and art. If you're a first-timer, prepare to have your expectations exceeded.
Backing Albarn on stage will be musical director Mike Smith on keyboards, Jeff Wootton on guitar, Seye Adelekan on bass, Jaega McKenna-Gordon on drums and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion, plus guest vocalists Bootie Brown and Kara Jackson.
Support Act: Trueno
Opening the evening will be Trueno, the Argentinian rapper, singer and songwriter who has been making waves across Latin America and beyond. It's a fitting choice for a band that has always championed genre-blending and global collaboration.
