Dust off your dancing shoes, Glasgow. One of the city's longest-running amateur companies is about to fill the King's Theatre with tap routines, sequins and some of the best-known tunes in musical theatre.

Glasgow Light Opera Club, better known as GLOC, bring 42nd Street to the Bath Street venue from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 October.

According to the What's On Glasgow listing, the show follows the company's productions of Legally Blonde, Footloose and Rock of Ages at the same theatre.

A musical about making a musical

Set at the height of the Great Depression, 42nd Street follows aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer, who arrives in New York City with dreams of making it big.

When the leading lady of a brand-new musical breaks her ankle just before opening night, Peggy might just get her shot at stardom.

The listing promises "dazzling tap routines, glittering costumes, and unforgettable songs". Those songs include We're in the Money, Lullaby of Broadway, Shuffle Off to Buffalo and Forty-Second Street.

It is easy to see the appeal: big ensemble numbers, tunes many people already know, and an underdog to cheer for.

More than a century of shows

GLOC have been staging operettas and musicals since 1908, according to the club's website. It describes itself as "an inclusive and friendly amateur dramatic club", with members from all walks of life and all age groups.

The club says it performs one major musical a year at the King's, alongside regular concerts and fundraising events.

Despite the name, the group no longer performs operas, Glasgow Live reported in a 2023 advertising feature placed by the club. That piece listed Fiddler on the Roof, Singin' in the Rain and All Shook Up among its past shows, with Grease marking its post-Covid return in 2022 and Legally Blonde following in October 2023.

The venue is backing the run too. The listing notes that the King's and Theatre Royal "are proud to support Amateur Dramatic societies".
