There was a time — not so very long ago — when a touring sound engineer who wanted pitch correction on a vocalist needed a dedicated rack unit or a laptop running third-party software, perched precariously on the production desk like an uninvited guest at dinner. Those days, it appears, are numbered.
Solid State Logic will preview SSL Live V6.2 at the NAB Show in Las Vegas (April 18–22), and the headline feature is SolidPitch — a native, onboard vocal tuning and processing engine built directly into the console's DSP. No outboard. No laptop. No additional licence fees. It runs inside the desk.
SolidPitch: the studio comes to the stage
SolidPitch is not merely a pitch corrector bolted onto a live platform. It is a three-part vocal processing engine offering tuning, doubling, and diatonic harmonisation — the sort of toolkit that, until now, lived exclusively in the studio or required a separate software chain running alongside the console.
The tuning engine handles everything from subtle, transparent correction to the full-bore, hard-tuned vocal effect that dominates modern pop production. The Doubler creates two copies of the tuned signal, which can be detuned and delayed to thicken the vocal or widened across a stereo path for spatial depth. A Mix parameter controls the balance between the dry tuned signal and the doubled copies, while a Depth control governs detune and delay amounts.
The Harmony section adds a pitch-shifted copy of the signal, with the interval controlled per note. Crucially, harmonies can be locked to a musical scale using the Scale Lock function and an onscreen keyboard, ensuring diatonic accuracy — no rogue thirds drifting into dissonance mid-chorus.
For touring engineers, the significance is straightforward: SolidPitch eliminates an entire node from the signal chain. One fewer device to patch, power, and pray over. One fewer point of failure on a festival main stage at midnight.
KLANG integration: immersive monitoring from the desk
The second headline feature is seamless integration with KLANG immersive in-ear monitoring processors. KLANG's technology places sound sources in a three-dimensional binaural space around the musician's head, transforming the traditional flat, mono or stereo wedge mix into something far more natural and spatially coherent.
With V6.2, KLANG processing devices can be controlled directly from the SSL Live surface. The console's Aux bus controls switch into a dedicated KLANG mode, presenting KLANG's own GUI for managing individual musician mixes. Audio routing works over MADI or Dante, and KLANG mixes can be freely combined with conventional Aux busses.
The practical upshot for monitor engineers is considerable: immersive IEM mixing without a separate control surface, without a second screen, and without leaving the SSL environment. Existing showfiles can be adapted to incorporate KLANG processing, or new projects built from scratch with immersive monitoring baked in from the start.
Automation Preview and expanded scene capacity
V6.2 also introduces Automation Preview mode, which temporarily isolates the console's live DSP from any surface changes. Operators can fire scenes, inspect cue states, and make adjustments without affecting the audio passing through the desk — a genuine safeguard for theatre operators and touring programmers working with complex, high-stakes cue lists.
Automation capacity has been expanded from 200 to 500 scenes, a change that will be felt most keenly in theatrical and large-format touring productions where scene counts routinely push against the old ceiling. Link Groups, meanwhile, allow paths to be permanently grouped — ideal for ganging mono paths into ad-hoc stereo pairs or linking EQ across a bank of microphones.
The console's internal Effects Rack can now be displayed on an external screen, giving engineers persistent visibility of critical processing such as the SolidPitch engine or a compressor on a lead vocal channel.
A free update — for every console
Perhaps the most striking detail is the price: nothing. SSL Live V6.2 will be available as a free download for the entire SSL Live console range, from the compact L100 Plus to the flagship L650. Every SSL Live desk currently deployed on tours, in theatres, and in installed venues worldwide will gain SolidPitch, KLANG integration, and the full suite of workflow enhancements at no additional cost.
In an industry not unaccustomed to paid upgrades and subscription models, that is a statement worth noting.
