What you will see
The weekend is a rare chance to explore the private workspaces of the artists based in the building, from jewellers and painters to paper makers and ceramicists. There is also a group exhibition bringing together established and emerging talent.
Hanson Street is home to around 150 artists and makers across 77 studios, including Glasgow Ceramics Studio and Glasgow Glass Studio. Visitors can meet the makers and learn about their artistic processes.
Steven Graham, a member of the Glasgow Glass Studio since 2017, says the glass studio has recently extended into another space, meaning it can offer more classes and workshops. “We're excited to show that off for open studios,” he says.
Printmaker Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor will also be showing visitors around. She has been based at Hanson Street since 2001, and says the building has let her develop her printed textile practice, undertake public commissions, and teach and run courses.
Twenty-five years of affordable space
The building was transformed by Wasps in 2001 from a cigarette factory into affordable artist studios. A quarter of a century on, the event reflects what the organisers describe as the breadth and energy of the community that has grown within its walls.
“For me, working at Hanson Street means being part of a community where talent inspires talent every day,” says Graham. “It's great to be surrounded by motivated, generous creatives who contribute to this special place.”
Kinnersly-Taylor says: “I moved into my studio 25 years ago, and it has proved a space where my printed textile practice can flourish... I can accommodate my specialist print equipment, and the north light is perfect, especially for colour matching.”
Kate Gray, chief executive of Wasps, says: “At Wasps, we believe creative communities need secure infrastructure, and Hanson Street continues to play a vital role in Glasgow's cultural life, supporting the artists who help define the city's cultural identity through their creativity, collaboration and contribution to civic life.”
Before you go
The event is listed under exhibitions, arts and crafts, and family and kids events, so it could make a good free outing for all ages. As always, it is worth checking with the organisers for any last-minute updates before you set off.
